JJCSince July of 2013, MBBB partner John Carroll has been the Chair of the Equal Justice Coalition (EJC). The EJC is a collaboration organized by the Massachusetts and Boston Bar Associations and the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC) to promote and protect state funding for legal aid for low-income residents confronting serious civil problems such as domestic violence, eviction, child custody disputes, consumer fraud, and denial of assistance benefits. MBBB is delighted that Attorney Carroll was selected for this distinguished honor and are proud to support his civil service efforts.

On January 30, 2014, the EJC hosted one of its largest annual events, Walk to the Hill. In his role as Chair of the Equal Justice Coalition, John Carroll addressed the crowd and acted as the Master of Ceremonies.  Each year for the past 15 years, Walk to the Hill for Civil Legal Aid has drawn hundreds of attorneys to participate in one of the largest lobby days at the Massachusetts State House. Their goal is to urge lawmakers to protect state funding for programs that provide civil legal aid to low-income Massachusetts residents.

At this year’s event, more than 500 attorneys heard from various speakers, including the Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court Roderick Ireland and the presidents of the Massachusetts Bar Association and Boston Bar Association, about the critical role that civil legal aid plays in ensuring equal access to justice. Attendees then visited their legislators to encourage them to provide an increase in funding for civil legal aid in the fiscal year 2015 Massachusetts state budget.
